Seven-year old waits for treatment as her health deteriorates

Pretty is a seven-year-old girl who lives in Pienaar near Nelspruit. Pretty was born with HIV and she lives a positive but difficult life with the virus. Pretty's mum didn't know her status when she was pregnant with Pretty and she did not know about mother-to-child transmission.

My name is TM. I live in Town Two, Khayelitsha. I was born on 1 January 1971. On 25 June 1997 I gave birth to a baby girl at Karl Bremmer Hospital. During that time I also heard that I was HIV-positive. My little girl passed away after five days.

Trying to change things in Mpophomeni

Mpophomeni is an urban area under the Umgeni Municipality in Kwazulu-Natal. There is a high rate of unemployment but Mpophomeni is a nice place. In the early 90s women were trying to survive by staying at hostels with people from different places. That is when HIV started to spread rapidly.
