The efforts of the Treatment Action Campaign for over five years have put the spotlight firmly on the role played by the pharmaceutical industry in the global HIV / AIDS catastrophe. They have led the fight against both the international drug companies who attempt to manipulate the market and against bureaucratic bungling and political obfuscation. Thousands have been mobilised to the cause at the national and international level through the commitment and bravery of those working for the campaign. Directly through their action, significant reduction in the price of antiretrovirals have been secured and many legal challenges have been won in court Yet, the battle goes on. Just last year, three million people died of AIDS and about five million more became infected with HIV. The Millennium Development Goals set the target of halting, and beginning to reverse the spread of HIV / AIDS by 2015. This goal will only be achieved if we are able to ensure equitable access to treatment. The invaluable campaign that has been led by the Treatment Access Campaign must continue.

Statement of support

It is scandalous and absurd that a virtual genocide can go pretty much unchecked and unacknowledged by the world at large. The scale of the problem of Hiv/Aids is pandemic and utterly critical. Urgent action needs to be taken to prevent the devastation of future generations, but it seems as if the world is in denial. We desperately need to find ways to create effective changes in order to tackle the extent of the situation. Education, prevention, treatment, and perhaps even....cure!? We can no longer afford to stick our heads in the sand. As an ambassador for the 46664..a woman and a mother, I am honored to join hands with FOTAC to make my contribution in whatever way I can.
